Expedition details

9 days and 1,200 km, a fantastic tour to the extreme north-west region of Vietnam along the border with China, one of the most beautiful and unspoiled areas on Earth characterized by stunning wilderness and inhabited by several mountain tribes. The trip includes seven days of riding: once left charming Hanoi, the route will take us largely on off-road and single trails with fords, suspension bridges, mule tracks and jungle paths, up to small isolated villages overlooking rice paddies and spectacular views.
We’ll also meet the local people and have the opportunity to visit their colorful local markets.

  • At the end of the Expedition, these products will become participant's property. In case of unavailability, some items might be replaced with substitutes of equal functionality and quality.
Mandatory requirements
  • Passport with residual validity of at least 6 months
  • International driving license, to be requested from the AAA (issuing time approx. 30 days)
  • Visa: Italian citizens do not require a visa for stays shorter than 15 days. International citizens are recommended to enquire with their local authorities.
  • No mandatory travel vaccinations. Recommended: Tetanus, typhoid-cholera, hepatitis A.
Riding experience
  • Average riding experience is needed – no particular difficulties are expected but there will be considerable off-road stretches requiring an adequate riding level to tackle dirt roads.

Expedition program

Day 1 - 10/11

Arrival In Hanoi

Arrival at Hanoi airport and transfer to the hotel. A day of relaxation and visit to Hanoi, a city that offers a rich tourist experience thanks to its unique blend of tradition and modernity, to be enjoyed in historic neighborhoods, lively markets and places where the delicious Vietnamese cuisine can be sampled.

Day 2 - 11/11

Hanoi – Pu Luong Nature Reserve

220km
On our Honda CRF 205 L motorcycles, we head south-west, crossing the Red River Delta, and immediately encounter extraordinary landscapes, amid rice terraces, imposing mountains and traditional villages. We follow the Ho Chi Minh Trail to reach Pu Luong Natural Reserve, with its forests, waterfalls and native ethnic communities.

Day 3 - 12/11

Pu Luong – Moc Chau

We depart toward the peaceful Mai Chau Valley, surrounded by mountains, renowned for its splendid natural landscape and inhabited by the White Thai ethnic group, distinguished by its engaging lifestyle. After enjoying our lunch, we reach the Moc Chau Plateau, famous for its milk production, tea hills and refreshing climate.

Day 4 - 13/11

Moc Chau – Nghia Lo

150km
We follow an old abandoned French colonial road that rapidly climbs up the mountain, offering panoramic views over the valleys and mountain ranges. We ride across the regions where Thai communities such as the Dao and H’mong ethnic groups live, cross the Black River on a ferry and continue on asphalt toward Phu Yen, situated against the background of the Fansipan mountain range.

Day 5 - 14/11

Nghia Lo – Mu Cang Chai

150km
Today, a thrilling off-road trail is planned for us, on secondary roads and fording various rivers. The highlights of the day are the stop in the Nghia Lo Valley and a meeting with the Dao, Thai and H’mong ethnic groups. You will admire century-old rice terraces and go on forgotten mountain paths overhanging steep slopes.

Day 6 - 15/11

Mu Cang Chai – Son La

180km
The off-road adventure continues along the paths in the Mu Cang Chai Valley. We cross narrow bridges, cross some easy fords and enjoy incredible panoramic views allowing us to immerse ourselves in the area’s natural beauty. After exploring the hot springs in the Ngoc Chien village, our trip takes us to Son La, the main city in Vietnam’s north-western region.

Day 7 - 16/11

Son La – Mai Chau

220km
The trip continues along secondary roads leading to the Xuan Nha Natural Reserve, with off-road stretches and open views over valleys and mountain ranges. The Reserve offers splendid scenery overlooking waterfalls, forests and canyons. In the Mai Chau Valley, a Thai hill tribe will welcome us to their quaint village with home-cooked dishes.

Day 8 - 17/11

Mai Chau – Hanoi

200km
On the last day of the trip, we cross the Pu Bin and Pu Luong natural reserve, renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty. We arrive via a panoramic winding road, and the scenery dramatically changes as we cross the cities of Phu Vinh and Phu Cuong, famous for their iconic sugar cane plantations and orange groves. We get back on our motorcycles for the last stretch of our adventure, which takes us back to Hanoi, where we spend our last night.

Day 9 - 18/11

Return flight

Departure on scheduled flight and return.
